Plant ID walks

Angelyn (June 2010)Walk with us at Spirit Mountain Sanctuary as we learn to identify plants growing in the mountains of western North Carolina.

The monthly walk provides access to dozens of plants we can identify and begin to know.  Each month we focus on a different plant (see below) while refreshing our memories about plants we previously identified.  Additional activities are designed to enhance our learning experience with plant identification.

Come prepared to:

  • learn plant identification skills
  • recognize plants you already know
  • discover and name plants new to you
  • develop a more intimate connection with one or more plants
  • follow plants through their life cycles
  • study a variety of plants in addition to wildflowers

  • March 10, 2012 — Hairy bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta)
  • April 14, 2012 — Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis)
  • May 12, 2012 –  Sweet cicely (Osmorhiza claytoni)
  • June 9, 2012 –  Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia)
  • July 14, 2012 –  Black cohosh (Actaea racemosa)
  • August 11, 2012 –  Indian tobacco (Lobelia inflata)
  • September 8, 2012 –  Tall coneflower (Rudbeckia laciniata)
  • October 13, 2012 –  Sassafras (Sassafras albidum)
  • November 10, 2012 –  Sycamore (Platanus occidentalis)
  • December 8, 2012 –  Christmas fern (Polystichum acrostichoides)
