Iris cristata, dwarf woodland iris. Never seen this one in the wild, but am familiar with it in my gardening business. Thanks for the mystery challenges- it’s fun to do.
Iris cristata, Dwarf Crested Iris I’ve never seen them in the wild either, not surprising since I live on the prairie but I grow a couple varieties in my shade gardens.
You both are “right on!” This is Dwarf crested iris (Iris cristata). I had never seen this beautiful flowering plant UNTIL I came across it in the wild. Now I’ve found several patches of this plant on the property where I live. It’s one of the spring blooming plants I eagerly look for each year.
Richard, I’m very glad you are enjoying the mystery challenges. I have fun doing them.
Joyce, thanks for growing native plants in your gardens! When I find a plant which is native to this area, and I like the plant, I usually encourage it to take up residence near me (by purchasing a plant from a local nursery and planting it here). My gardens are growing larger as I plant more of these wonderful plants.
